Extra Credit Option #2

I chose this map because it is similar to my final map because it shows two different data sets.

II chose this map because it displays the information well and the layout is easy to read.

I chose this map because it gives me a good idea of the route of the typhoon.

I chose this map because it is interesting, funny, and you may learn something you didn't know before.

I chose this map because the font, neatline, and border of the legend all fit the clean theme of this map.

I like the creativity of the monitor in this map and think it suits the map and topic well.

I like the aspect this map gives of the size of the typhoon to the earth.

I like this map because it shows a lot of different data and it all seems to still come together.
I like this map because the layout is good at fitting many different things onto the map.

Final Project Topic and Proposal

The subject of my map will be the precipitation, wind gusts, and inundation totals in places in Virginia from Hurricane Sandy in 2012. I chose this subject because of the effect the storm had on our state and I wanted to know more about the storm in general.

Tropical storms can be devastating for a state and this storm is significant because our state was associated with it. My map audience will be the general population because this information is easy to understand and will be factual because it is quantitative-based. I am envisioning a graduated symbol map because this will help locate the areas where Sandy was most impactful.

I am planning on making transparent blue circles because the circles are easy to recognize and the blue will be a good representation for precipitation.  I envision the state of Virginia being a light shade of green with the county boundary lights in a light color, possibly grey.  The scope of my map will be the state of Virginia because that is where I am focusing my data on.

The data is from The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration website from the report, Tropical Cyclone Report Hurricane Sandy written on February 12, 2013. The size of the dataset is around 40 to 50 entries and I like it because it hopefully show specifically where the hurricane was in Virginia. The data seems very accurate because it is part of a large in depth report on the hurricane.

The basemap I am going to need is the map of Virginia and possible the map of the counties of Virginia. I first expect to make my classes, then get my basemaps, add the proportional symbols in the right location, add color, add the title, legend, description, name and date, and scale. I expect to encounter challenges with making my circles a see-thru blue and having it look well with the color of the map of Virginia.

I think I will be challenged with matching the county borders with the map of Virginia as well. There is also the challenge of making my map interesting, easy to read and understand as well, so picking the size and fonts and backgrounds will require some experimenting.

I hope to have my map styled similar to this one.

Color Map

I chose this map because the map used different colors which broke up the counties well and the colors looked well together also.

Lab 6: Color

The map in my hand has a much brighter blue compared to the map I uploaded. The green on my uploaded map looks brighter and yellowy compared to the map in my hand which is not as bright and dull. The medium lime green on my uploaded map is bright and eyecatching, and the same green on my printed map is not as bright and does not jump out. The same suit follows for all of the colors on the maps, except the blue background. The printed out map is not as brighter and neon, but I still like the color scheme and think it fits well. There is not much of a noticeable difference and the only change I would make to my online map would be to make the blue background brighter.

Cloropleth Maps Post

I chose this map because the colors work well with the layout and this map conveys the right amount of information with only 5 classes.

Weekly Post: Typography

This map of Virginia is interesting to me because it seems to use both serif (states) and non-serif fonts (cities) and they seem to work well together.

Weekly Post #2, Projection Map

This is a map showing how much of the general population lives in Asia and India, a little over half.  I chose it because it seems to accurately show the whole world without much distortion. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/worldviews/wp/2013/05/07/map-more-than-half-of-humanity-lives-within-this-circle/

Virginia Earthquake Map

I chose this map because it is easy to read and understand the data. The colors fit well together and accurately portrays an idea of where the earthquake was mainly located.

USGS Earthquake Intensity Map / Epicenter: 5.9 earthquake was 6 km (4 miles) SSE (152°) from Louisa, VA, 6 km (4 miles) SW (236°) from Mineral, VA....felt heavily in my office in downtown WDC.
